To honor his exceptional leadership and unwavering dedication, the SIU Aviation alumni are initiating a fundraising campaign to dedicate the North Lobby of the Glenn Poshard Transportation Education Center in recognition of Dr. David A. NewMyer. This tribute celebrates Dr. NewMyer’s significant contributions and guarantees lasting acknowledgment of his profound influence on SIU’s School of Aviation.
Dr. NewMyer began his long and illustrious career with SIU in 1975 when he was hired as a part-time instructor for SIU’s School of Technical Careers Off-Campus Programs. He moved to Carbondale in 1979, becoming a visiting assistant professor in the aviation management program. He was selected as the department chair of aviation management and flight in 1993 and has now led the program for over 20 years.
Dr. NewMyer, originally from California, earned his bachelor’s degree in history and government from the University of Redlands. He later completed a master’s degree in political science from Drew University and a master’s in transportation from Northwestern University. Dr. NewMyer earned his Ph.D. in educational administration and higher education from SIU. Throughout his career, he has dedicated himself to education, training thousands of aviation professionals whose impact is felt globally.
Dr. NewMyer is widely recognized for his expertise in airport planning and airline management. His 40 years in the classroom speak for themselves. He is also recognized for his extensive research efforts. To date, he has 54 published articles and authored 39 technical reports. In addition to his leadership on university matters, Dr. NewMyer has been a tireless volunteer at the local (30+ year member of the DeSoto School Board), state (completed four terms for the Illinois Board of Aeronautical Advisors) and national (long-term member of the University Aviation Association) levels.
SIU’s Aviation programs are nationally recognized as some of the best in the country, thanks to the visionary leadership that has consistently elevated them. Under Dr. NewMyer’s guidance, these programs thrived, with Dr. NewMyer serving as a true pioneer in their development.
The total naming gift level for the Dr. David A. NewMyer Lobby is $250,000.
