Reimagining the 4th Floor: A Student-Led Transformation at SIU

Southern Illinois University Carbondale is embarking on a bold, student-driven mission to transform the former WIDB Radio Station on the 4th floor of the Student Center into a vibrant, inclusive, and multi-functional Commuter and Student Lounge. This space will be a hub of creativity, connection, and comfort—designed by students, for students.

Why This Project Matters:

Many students, especially commuters, lack a dedicated space to relax, collaborate, or simply recharge. This project addresses that gap by creating a welcoming environment that reflects the diversity and energy of SIU’s student body.

What We’re Building:

The new space will include:

• A main lounge with flexible seating, a large TV for watch parties, and a WIDB history wall
• A reception area with wayfinding, moss wall, and donor recognition
• A lactation room with a rocker, changing table, TV, and fridge
• A study and collaboration room with whiteboards and charging stations
• A conference room for RSO meetings and presentations
• A WIDB-themed podcast studio with professional equipment
• A kitchenette with new cabinets, fridge, microwave, and more
• A student mural wall, music system, and recreational games

Budget Breakdown:

We’re seeking support to help fund this $252,000 transformation. Key costs include:

• Furniture: $135,000
• Flooring, ceiling, lighting, and paint: $49,500
• AV, music system, podcast gear, and Wi-Fi upgrades: $12,400
• Kitchenette and graphics: $7,300
• Recreation equipment and miscellaneous: $6,300
• Contingency: $42,000
